Have you ever wondered where yarn comes from?  Have you seen a spinning wheel in action and thought, “I’d like to try that!”  Join us to watch, learn, and have a hands-on opportunity to create a short length of yarn with Serendipity Spinners in STEAM Central!

Introduction to Hand Spinning.

Spinning plant and animal fiber into yarn is an ancient craft that has provided people with clothing, art and protection for centuries.  Remember Snow White who pricked her finger on a spindle or Rumpelstilskin who spun straw into gold for the would-be princess?

Production of thread and yarn was a major cottage industry for European ladies and a necessity for American pioneers.

Today, hand spinning is an art, craft, or hobby for many who enjoy creating items from sheep wool, Angora goat fiber, cotton, alpaca, silk and many other fibers.

Learn about the process of turning raw fleece into a lovely yarn from a local hand spinner.   This introductory class will explain and demonstrate the process from shearing to skeining with examples and demonstrate the tools involved. Participants will have a short hands-on opportunity to create a sample and may schedule addition sessions with experienced spinners.

Saturday afternoons in July:

Vishaka Brij will be teaching mom/daughter teams basic computer programming concepts, like loops, variables, conditionals, and functions that form the basis for all programming languages.  By the end of July, each team will have created a website using the concepts learned.

Vishaka Brij has been working in the computer software industry for a few years. She holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science and works in San Angelo with TimeClock Plus.  She holds a Guinness world record for the Windows App Fest-Hackathon and is fluent in several programming languages.  Vishaka is passionate about sharing her knowledge with others interested in computer science and has generously volunteered to lead a special summer edition of Girls Who Code: Moms and Daughters,

While the program is called Girls Who Code, boys are welcome to join, too.  There are no age limits for this program, but both parent and child participants should have some basic computer skills—ability to use a mouse and keyboard and basic Internet skills.  Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied in the class by a parent or guardian.  You must sign-up to participate on the library’s STEAM Central website, http://tgclibrary.com/steamcentralreservations.asp, beginning June 1—space is limited to 12 teams.  Teams will meet in the Stephens Central Library Computer Lab, 2nd floor, July 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 1 PM.

The ideal audience for this training would be service coordinators, social workers, employment specialists, direct care staff who support employment goals for individuals, and other staff who support employment goals for individuals.  This training is not only for Local Authority staff,  but equally important for private providers in your catchment area. we are working on an  online registration process for attendees. This is very valuable free training. Also, knowing that many LIDDA’s cover a large service area, if you have LIDDA or private provider staff  that would be unable to attend due being a long distance away, seek out one of the  other sessions.

Description:

The Employment First Services and Benefits Training is a six hour training that consists of a basic introduction to the Employment First Movement and why the subject is important, basic information on the HCBS rule changes, billing under the 1915(c) waivers, Social Security Benefits and Work Incentives, processes with Texas Workforce Commission – Texas Workforce Solutions Vocational Rehabilitation, Texas Health and Human Services Employment Recruitment Coordinator Project, and a session for management at the end of the day on financial aspects and rates for employment services billed under the waivers.

If you have questions please contact Georgana Huff at          325-658-7750
